Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) Update for Oregon Horse Owners and Veterinarians
As of today, there are no confirmed cases of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in Oregon. The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to protecting equine health across the state.
While Oregon remains EHV-1 free at this time, horse owners and equine facility managers are encouraged to remain vigilant and practice good biosecurity to help prevent the introduction and spread of this contagious virus. As equine events continue to be held throughout the state under the measures mandated by the emergency rules, it is important that we all play our part by being watchful for symptoms.
Biosecurity Recommendations:
To reduce the risk of EHV-1 transmission:
• Isolate new or returning horses for at least 21 days before introducing them to your herd.
• Avoid sharing equipment (e.g., water buckets, tack, grooming tools) between horses.
• Disinfect stalls, trailers, and equipment regularly, especially after events or travel.
• Monitor horses daily for signs of illness, including fever, nasal discharge, or neurological symptoms (e.g., incoordination, trouble standing).
• Limit horse-to-horse contact at shows, events, and boarding facilities.
• Consult your veterinarian immediately if you suspect illness.
